The technique of investment casting is both one of the oldest and most advanced of the metallurgical arts. It is also known as lost wax casting,
is a precision casting process used to create metal parts from almost any alloys, and is typically used to create complex, thin wall castings.
As old as about 5000 years ago, in the time of the Pharaohs, it was used by the Egyptians to make gold jewellery. About 100 years ago, the use of
Lost wax process was applied for dental inlays and later also for Surgical Implants.
Nearly 200 alloys are available with investment casting. These metals range from ferrous- Stainless steel, tool steel, carbon steel and ductile iron to non-ferrous
– aluminium, copper and brass.
Prezentare generală a procesului
Procesul de turnare cu investiții începe cu un model. În mod tradițional, modelul era turnat prin injecție în ceară de turnătorie. Porțile și orificiile de ventilație sunt atașate modelului, care este apoi atașat la piesa de turnare. După aceea, toate modelele sunt montate pe canalul de turnare, producând ceea ce se numește arbore de turnare. În aceste puncte, turnarea este gata pentru decojire. Arborele de turnare este scufundat în mod repetat în suspensie ceramică pentru a crea o coajă dură numită investiție. Modelele sunt apoi topite (numită și ardere) din investiție, lăsând o cavitate în forma piesei care urmează să fie turnată.
Un aliaj metalic este topit, adesea într-un cuptor cu inducție, și turnat în materialul preîncălzit. După răcire, învelișul este spart, piesele metalice sunt tăiate din arbore, iar guri de aerisire și orificiile de ventilație sunt șlefuite.
